What is double exposure photography? A how-to guide

Double exposure photography places two exposures on one frame. “Multiple exposure” is the broader technical term for combining two or more; a double exposure is its simplest form. On film, the same area of emulsion is exposed repeatedly before development, superimposing two latent images. A digital camera records separate frames and combines them into a single in-camera composite. Both methods can place foliage inside a portrait, merge two locations or repeat a moving subject across the frame.
The effect depends on accumulated exposure. Every exposure contributes more light. Dark areas in the first image receive little exposure and remain available to record the second; bright areas use more of the medium’s tonal range and tend to dominate. Midtones blend. On negative film, additional light creates additional negative density. This is why a dark silhouette against a bright sky is such a reliable structure: the second scene appears most clearly inside the shadowed figure.
To make a double exposure:

Check the camera. A film camera needs a multiple-exposure control that re-cocks the shutter without engaging the film transport. Sheet-film cameras make the process particularly direct because the same sheet can simply be exposed again. On a digital camera, look for Multiple Exposure, Image Overlay or a similar menu. Rewinding and reloading an entire roll is also possible, but inconsistent frame registration can shift the images.

Plan the negative space. Begin with a high-contrast silhouette, dark building or shadowed profile. ILFORD’s double-exposure guide recommends creating strong separation between the underexposed subject and bright background. Remember the useful shorthand: darkness receives the next image; brightness resists it. On film, the order does not alter the basic additive exposure, but photographing the silhouette first often makes the second composition easier to visualize.

Compensate for the combined light. For two equally weighted exposures covering the full frame, begin by underexposing each by one stop. For three exposures, reduce each by about 1⅔ stops; for four, reduce each by two stops. The general adjustment is log₂(N) stops, where N is the number of exposures. This is a starting point rather than a law. Color-negative film has generous exposure latitude, while transparency film is less forgiving. A mostly black frame may require little compensation because it contributes relatively little exposure.

Make the second exposure. Place its most important detail inside the darker area of the first composition. A portrait can hold tree branches, architecture or moving water; a dark room can hold a window, moon or illuminated figure. Keep the camera stationary when edges should register precisely. Rotate, tilt or move it deliberately to create displacement and repetition.

Develop normally. Multiple-exposed film does not require special chemistry. C-41, black-and-white and E-6 film can go through their ordinary processes. Automated scanning may try to normalize unusually dense or high-contrast frames, so requesting flat, minimally corrected scans can preserve more room for interpretation.
There are several useful structures to test. A silhouette-and-texture exposure creates a recognizable container for the second image. A full-frame blend allows two scenes to compete equally and usually feels more chaotic. Repeated exposures from a fixed tripod can record a person in several positions, turning one frame into a sequence. A film swap—one photographer exposes a roll, rewinds it with the leader still accessible and gives it to another—introduces collaboration, chance and imperfect frame alignment. A related technique is stroboscopic flash. Instead of opening and closing the shutter several times, the photographer makes one long exposure while a flash fires repeatedly. Each burst freezes the moving subject in a new position. The result resembles a multiple exposure, but technically it is one exposure containing several pulses of illumination.
Digital cameras add another layer of control. In Add or Additive mode, frames are superimposed without automatic gain adjustment, so manual compensation matters. Average mode reduces the gain of each component according to the number of images. Lighten preserves the brighter value at each location; Darken preserves the darker. Nikon documents these as overlay modes, while Canon describes comparable Additive, Average, Bright and Dark controls. Saving the individual RAW files, when available, preserves the option to rebuild the composite later.
The strongest double exposures are planned around light rather than subject matter. One image supplies the structure; the next enters the portions that remain open. The frame is exposed more than once, but it becomes one photograph.
