What is Workshop?

Workshop is a living gallery and creative network built around independent work. It is a place to discover what people are making, read the stories behind it, find open collaborations and join the communities forming around particular places, practices and ideas.

The basic structure follows the life of a project. Someone might wake up wanting to make a short film that weekend. They can post the idea as a Collab, describe what they are trying to make and invite specific roles, general contributions or simple suggestions. That Collab can then be shared with a location group such as Chicago, a medium such as filmmaking or a more particular creative scene.

A Collab does not have to explain everything at once. Its creator can publish blog posts about the idea, process or research behind it, then connect those posts directly to the project. Someone considering joining can see not only what help is needed, but how the creator thinks and what the work might become.

When the project is finished, it can be published to the Gallery. Its Gallery Page becomes a lasting record: a home for images, video, credits, descriptions, related writing and links to wherever the work can be found. A book might link to Amazon or Apple Books. An album might link to Spotify. A film might live on YouTube, Vimeo or a distributor’s website. Workshop does not need to replace those platforms. It gives the work a central place of its own.

Over time, each member’s profile becomes a portfolio and creative archive containing their finished work, open collaborations and published writing. It records not only the final object, but the community and process surrounding it.

Workshop is organized through mediums and topics. A book is a medium, but its topics might include agriculture, food, health or history. Because knowledge is interdisciplinary, the same topic can connect work made through writing, film, music, visual art, research, cooking or forms that do not fit neatly into an established category.

Groups and events provide the local and communal layer. Members can gather around a city, medium or scene; find screenings, critiques and workshops; or encounter someone whose work intersects with their own.

Workshop is the platform (the website you're on). Workshop Independent is the independent publishing project building it. It's a platform for self-publishers, artists, creatives, creators, coders, knowledge-makers, and everyone in between.

Workshop is live software, and it will continue to evolve alongside the people using it. Its purpose, however, is already clear: to help people meet one another, make more work, keep track of what they have made and create meaning around it.
